Medical Bill Forgiveness Programs That Can Wipe Your Debt
Millions of Americans are sitting on medical debt they don’t have to pay — simply because they didn’t know help was available.
Medical bill forgiveness programs are real, they’re widespread, and many people who qualify never apply. Here’s what exists and how to access it.
1. Hospital Charity Care Programs
Every nonprofit hospital in the United States — about 60% of all hospitals — must offer financial assistance as a condition of their tax-exempt status. These charity care programs can reduce or completely eliminate your bill.
Income eligibility varies by hospital but is often available to households earning up to 200–400% of the federal poverty level. For a family of four, that’s up to $111,000/year at 400% FPL.
How to apply: Call the hospital billing department and ask for a “financial assistance application” or “charity care application.” You’ll need to provide proof of income (pay stubs, tax returns) and proof of household size.
2. Nonprofit Hospital Price Caps
Under IRS rules, nonprofit hospitals cannot charge uninsured patients more than the “amounts generally billed” to insured patients. If you were charged full list price (called “chargemaster” rates), you may be entitled to a retroactive reduction to insured rates.
3. State and Local Programs
Many states have their own medical debt relief programs. Examples include:
- New York: The “NYS Indigent Care Pool” subsidizes hospitals to provide free care
- California: The “Hospital Fair Pricing Act” caps what uninsured patients pay
- Massachusetts: Free Care program covers low-income residents
Search “[your state] hospital financial assistance program” to find what’s available where you live.
4. RIP Medical Debt (Now Undue Medical Debt)
This nonprofit buys medical debt portfolios for pennies on the dollar — then forgives them entirely. They’ve abolished over $10 billion in medical debt. You can’t apply directly, but if your debt qualifies (typically below 200% of poverty level or debt exceeding 5% of income), you may receive a letter saying your debt is gone.
5. Negotiated Settlements
If formal programs don’t apply, direct negotiation often achieves 40–60% reductions. Hospitals that have already written off your debt in their accounting are often willing to settle for 20–30 cents on the dollar just to close the file.
How to Find Out What You Qualify For
Start with one phone call to the hospital billing department: “I’m having difficulty paying this bill. What financial assistance programs do you offer, and can you tell me if I qualify?”
This single call has helped thousands of patients reduce bills by tens of thousands of dollars.
